In short
The visura storica (historical cadastral record) lists every change to a property from the setting up of the cadastre to today: transfers of ownership, subdivisions, mergers, changes of category and of cadastral income. It is needed when the numbers in an old deed no longer match today's map.

You have today's boundary here
The historical record tells how today's parcel came about. Today's parcel, with its shape and area, is on the map without asking for anything.

When you need it
A piece of land is subdivided in 1987: parcel 112 becomes 340 and 341. In 1998 parcel 341 is merged with 342 and parcel 388 is created. Today the map shows 388, and the title deed in your hands says 112. They are the same piece of land, and no current document tells you so: the ordinary visura shows 388 and nothing else.
The historical record is the only one that lines up the three steps with their dates, and lets you state in a deed that this land is that land. It is for anyone holding an old title deed.
When the ordinary one is enough
If the property has not changed identifiers, the historical record repeats the ordinary one with one more line. The difference only shows when there has been a subdivision, a merger or a missed cadastral update (voltura): if the deed and the map give the same number, the ordinary one is enough.
